Finding the Right Doc
Whether you have a family gene of certain types of cancer or unhealthy habits that may contribute to heart conditions, one key to being your healthiest self is establishing a strong rapport with your doctor.
When looking for a primary care doctor or a specialist, begin with research. Seek out patient reviews online. Talk with friends or family members who may have received care from the doctor in the past, and make an appointment for an initial in-office visit — when you form your own opinion of the doctor.
During the appointment, pay attention to the doctor's communication skills and personality. After your visit, ask yourself a few key questions, such as:
- What was the overall atmosphere of the office?
- Were you comfortable? Did you feel welcomed by the staff?
- Did you feel like you could ask the doctor questions?
- Are the office hours and location convenient for you?
Your comfort level is critical to ensuring successful outcomes. If you feel you would be better with another doctor, continue your search until you find the perfect match. Your persistence will pay off in the long run.
Preventive care is key to optimal health, and your primary care doctor isn't the only healthcare provider you should regularly consult. For optimal health, visit a variety of specialists throughout the year. Key players may also include:
- Dentist — Your dentist can do more than clean your teeth and fill cavities. They may also perform critical screenings for cancers affecting your mouth and spot other health conditions by looking at your gums and teeth.
- Dermatologist — Regular skin cancer screenings can help your doctor find disease in the earliest stage when it is easier to treat. Talk with your doctor about how often you should have these screenings.
- Ophthalmologist or optometrist — In addition to maximizing your vision by updating your prescription for contacts or glasses, your eye doctor may be able to identify a wide variety of health conditions, such as arthritis and heart disease. Observing the health of blood vessels in the eye can offer clues about overall wellness.
